Mission
The mission of the SEI Pentathlon is to save Ganga by connecting youth through adventure, alternate sports and environmental consciousness.
Overview
SEI Pentathlon is an endurance race spanning over a distance of 525 km (approx.) from Gaumukh the source of the river Ganga to Kolkata near its mouth through 5 kinds of adventure sports in 5 legs viz. trekking, white water rafting, kayaking, rowing and sailing.
It is a team race, each team comprises of 8 participants with any 6 team members participating in each of the 5 sports.
It is a pan India open competition with provision of only 6-8 teams in each competition.
The competition is divided in 2 phases as follows :
- Phase I in Uttarakhand:
Trekking : 22 km
Rafting : 72 km - Phase II in West Bengal:
Kayaking : 120 km
Rowing & Sailing : 325 km

Participants
Any medically fit Indian and skilled in all five adventure sports mentioned can participate in SEI Pentathlon. It is an inclusive competition that is gender agnostic and inclusive.
Teams have to register. Registration fee is INR 2500 per participant.

Jury
The jury comprises of an eclectic mix of mountaineers, sailors and administrators.

Prize
- INR 5 lacs for the winning team
- INR 3 lacs for 1st runners up
- INR 2 lacs for the 2nd runners up
The prize distribution ceremony is held in Kolkata with a galaxy of eminent people attending the same along with friends and family of the competitors.
In 2023, the prize money was sponsored by Cdr George Albert Duke (Retd), Nao SM, VSM
Green Initiatives
A team is dedicated to spread awareness about the Ganga along its course. The competition is a green initiative with no use of any polluting equipment. Further, school and college students are invited at various locations to interact with the participants and understand the river better.
The team demonstrates environmental sensitivity by leaving the camping sites along the river bank clean after use at all locations.
